Men and Women In Films in 2011
In 2011 women headlined 13 of the Top 50 Grossing films. Out of those 13 films when women headlined the film only 3 films saw a women in that leading role get nominated for Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress. 6 out of 13 of those films were Comedy films. At this years, Women in Film's 2012 Ceremony, 3-time Academy Award Winner Meryl Streep acknowledged that "five little movies [over the last five years] aimed at women have brought in over 1.6 billion in the worldwide box office."_ Three of those five movies Meryl Streep played in and she won an Academy Award for one of them. All three of these films were different genres. Why can't women be more diverse like their male counterparts? Why should men dominate certain genres? In 2009 Kathryn Bigelow became the first women to win the Best Director Award at the 82nd Academy Awards. She beat out James Cameron who was an early favorite for Avatar which is the all-time highest grossing film in the world. This speaks volumes about the changing atmosphere of women in films.
